President's Report
Hello,
My name is Jim Janssen with Sika Corporation. I am proud to serve as the 2018 President of the Minnesota Glass Association. Our Association grew in 2017. Welcome to all new members and thank you for the continued support from our regular and affiliate members. We want to continue to grow in 2018 to insure the Association remains strong and in place for years to come.
There has been a lot of activity over the last year. The MGA has a voice at the Capitol and, with 40+ years, our voice carries weight. The MGA is in place to protect both the Auto and Flat glass industries. We don’t know what the future holds, but by strengthening this Association, we know that whatever does come we will not be alone in the fight. I look forward to seeing you at our events over the next year. Let’s make 2018 a great year for the MGA.

Update from the State Capitol
The 2018 legislative session began on Tuesday, February 20th and they are off and running! I am very excited to be representing the Minnesota Glass Association again, it is an honor to represent you and your businesses at the Capitol.
There have been several changes since the legislature adjourned last May. The federal government adopted sweeping tax changes which will require the Minnesota legislature to pass a tax bill this session to adopt conforming changes and avoid tax increases for Minnesotans. A November budget deficit looks to be changing into a possible $900 million budget surplus, giving the legislature additional funding for budget priorities. The motor vehicle registration system became a complete mess, requiring a $43 million additional investment which the legislature will need to consider. The main goal of the legislative session will be adoption of a bonding or capital improvements budget bill. The Governor has recommended a $1.5 billion list of projects which the legislature will examine when putting together their own bill. The legislature will also be tackling the growing opioid addiction epidemic and recent reports of elder abuse and neglect.
Key 2018 Dates

- Easter/Passover Break: March 30–April 8
- Constitutional deadline to adjourn: May 21
MGA Legislative Issues
The House and Senate Commerce committees will begin meeting next week. We will be watching for legislation that may negatively impact the MGA and its members, while also looking for opportunities to strengthen existing laws relating to glass and other issues. We will keep you informed as the Session progresses.

PPI: Glass and Glazing Material Prices Climb in January

Prices for materials used in the glass and glazing industry rose in January, according to the latest Producer Price Index (PPI) data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).
The monthly PPI for flat glass in the commodity category increased 0.7 percent in January from the previous month, and it’s up 1.8 percent from January 2017. According to the BLS, the commodity classification “organizes products and services by similarity or material composition, regardless of the industry classification of the producing establishment.”
The index for flat glass manufacturing in the industry classification jumped 1.6 percent, and those prices have increased 6 percent since January 2017. The industry classification measures “changes in prices received for the industry’s output sold outside the industry (that is, its net output).”
Prices for fabricated structural metal products were up 0.7 percent in January, but that index, in the commodity grouping, is up 2.7 percent for the year. Ornamental and architectural metal product manufacturing, in the industry category, saw price increases of 2 percent for the month and 4.2 percent since 2017.
The PPI for metal windows rose 0.1 percent from its December level, and is 3.5 percent above 2017’s levels. Metal doors and frames increased 0.1 percent for the month and are up 4.6 percent for the year.
The cost of builders’ hardware, which includes hardware used in doors and windows, fell 0.5 percent in January. Those prices are 1.5-percent higher than in 2017.
